Why DO-IT-YOURSELF?

If you are a skilled Do-It-Yourself homeowner you may be asking "Where is the financial gain from replacing or installing my own new heating and or cooling system?".

The average do it yourself homeowner can save up to 60% off of a contractor quoted installation.

Using an average system replacement cost of $4,500 to $7,500. That's a savings of $2,800 to $4,900. By purchasing your own equipment, by doing much of the installation yourself within your ability and within local and legal guidelines, and by hiring a qualified technician or installer who will allow you to do as much of the project as you can and then employing their service to complete your project, these savings are real and substantial.

In addition the average homeowner may reduce their energy consumption by as much as 50%. Many save more. If average heating costs are $1,400.

There's an additional $700 in those costs saved. Air Conditioning energy costs average $1,200. There's an additional $600 saved. The average homeowner can save as much as $4000 the first year by taking the base savings of a new system, combined with the energy savings of upgrading efficiency.

In some cases, the average system cost will pay for itself in less than two years. That is a very healthy motivation. Where else will you find an investment that returns your money faster than replacing your heating and air conditioning system?

The best investment you can find is not on Wall Street, but is on YOUR street!

MY NEW HVAC SYSTEM. WHAT ELSE DO I NEED?

Most homeowners who are contemplating buying a new heating, air conditioning or heat pump system, simply pick up the phone and call the local HVAC professional and are given a lump sum price for a new installation or change out.

During these unstable financial times, homeowners are taking more control over their money and are making more of the decisions that effect their pocketbooks and bank accounts. This kind of control can also be taken when purchasing a new Heating or Cooling system. A homeowner who chooses this route has the potential of saving thousands of dollars.
OK, so, you know that you need an indoor air handling device (gas furnace, or electric furnace/air handler). You also need an outdoor air conditioner or heat pump and a matching indoor evaporator coil. Is that it? NO!
Let’s look at what all is required to put together a complete system. This is really easy.

EQUIPMENT:
1. Air Conditioner or Heat Pump
2. Furnace or Air Handler
3. Indoor Evaporator Coil
4. Thermostat
Now what?

INSTALLATION SUPPLIES:
5. Refrigeration Line Set (this is a set of copper tubes that connect the indoor and outdoor units)
6. Condenser Pad (this is the pad that the outdoor unit sits on. Size is based on outdoor unit size)
7. Electrical Whip (this is an insulated electrical conduit that goes to the outdoor unit)
8. Electric Disconnect (this is the box mounted on the outside of the home that the outdoor unit is connected to that allows the electrical power to the unit to be turned on and off for service)
Finally.

ACCESSORIES:
9. Air Filter System (Standard, High Efficiency Media Type or Electronic)
10. Air Purification UV Light (removes allergens from the air with Ultra-Violet Light)
11. Humidifier (adds humidity to the air in winter to reduce static electricity and increase the life of certain materials in the home such as wood furniture and cloth upholstery and adds health benefits)

CHOOSING YOUR NEXT AIR CONDITIONER

If you are considering replacing your old air conditioner, or are purchasing a split system air conditioner for the first time, here are some features and benefits to consider.

Air conditioners and air conditioner manufactures have followed an interesting curve over the years. At one time, each manufacturer made efforts to create their own technology. After decades of trials the air conditioners that are manufactured today are all very similar, regardless of brand. Each manufacturer will try to create minor differences that will set them apart from their competition, but in reality almost every brand of air conditioner on the market today has mostly the same internal components, same technology, and very similar warranties. Also, all air conditioner manufacturers are under the same efficiency guidelines, mandated by the same international protocol. This means that every manufacturer must comply with certain energy efficiency standards and must only use specific refrigerants. This also levels the playing field.

SEER = Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio For you technical types, this means that the SEER rating is the Btu of cooling output during a simulated, typical cooling-season divided by the total electric energy input in watt-hours (W•h) during the same period. SEER = BTU ÷ W•h . But, you don’t need to worry about that. All you need to know is that as of January 23, 2006, the minimum standard SEER being manufactured and sold in the U.S. is 13 SEER. If you have an air conditioner that was manufactured before that date, it is likely that you have a 10 SEER, 8 SEER or even 6 SEER.
So, what does it all mean to you? I like things simple, so here you go. As an average, each digit of SEER that you gain in efficiency is equal to 7-9% energy savings. Here is an example of how that can effect you.
Let’s say you have an 8 SEER air conditioner. You decide to upgrade to the new minimum standard 13 SEER unit. If your average monthly operating cost for your current system is $175 per month, the upgrade could, in effect, save you an average of $70 per month. WOW! The savings alone in this change could more then pay for new HVAC equipment in a very short time.

So as you research you new HVAC equipment purchase, take a hard look at SEER. Even though there is a significant price difference between 13 SEER and 16 SEER equipment, the higher efficiency models will have advantages that are not only more comfortable, but the savings in energy can offset the price difference. It is truly a “pay now, or pay later” event.
